America

Three little girls. Spotting one of my favorite local designer’s totes and wristlets, stars — some red, some blue, one little girl reaches up and gently touches the stars and softly whispers, “America.”

Did you hear that, the breath leaving my body?

“Yes. America.”

Takes my breath away. Again.

I find their mother.

“Did you hear what she said?” I was so proud, bursting with pride, I wanted mama to know.

“I did. They go to a private school in Florida. Every morning they stand, hand over heart, and say the Pledge of Allegiance. They learn about America. I hear their pride in our country. I really think it makes a difference. And this year the little one gets to join them.”
