You've heard both pronunciations if you've listened to any news whatsoever, Kiev, Kyiv. My knowledge of working parts of the former USSR, which we all knew at the time would eventually be pulled, forced back into the Russian empire, is quite limited. So today I researched a bit. This is what I learned...
Kiev and Kyiv are indeed the same city. Correct me if my research is off-base.
MSM uses both pronunciations for the capital of Ukraine. This tells me those who like to think their intelligence far exceeds the intelligence of deplorables is off base, truly an understatement.
Limited research tells me Kiev is the Russian derivation, Kyiv is the Ukrainian language derivation.
I suspect most Ukrainians would prefer Kyiv.
Listen as those supposedly 'in the know' speak. It's actually quite interesting, telling.
I do have friends substantially educated concerning Russia and Ukraine, and will quiz them the next time I get to visit with them.
I'm not an expert in anything Russian or Ukrainian. I do, however, question everything.
You do this too, question everything.
