Sent to me by a dear friend.
So so good.
There is much encouragement in one tiny word: hope.
Hope in Little Surprises
Life is full of ambiguities and unanswered questions. Yet we survive, we continue to find pleasure and joy in the smallest things. We struggle with some temptation, some problem that plagues us and makes our days heavy and our nights broken and troubled. And then for a few minutes or an hour some small surprise (a piece of music, a card game, a visit from an old friend, a scent of roses in the air), and we are temporarily drawn out of ourselves into something other. Life should have its little surprises. When there are no more little joys, no more surprises, our own pseudo-sophistication is killing the life within us: and it is time to become like little children again. The ambiguities and questions will be there no matter what we do. The little surprises will be there only if we want them, only if we expect them to come, and that is hope. And that sustains us.
