Two Miles

I’m flat on my back, on the table. We’re assessing the situation. She continues to lift my leg. How does this feel? Fine. This? Good.

Well Debbie, your hamstrings are incredibly flexible.

I should be happy.

No.

Take my leg to my nose for heaven sake, we were so close.

Nope. She wouldn’t do it.

The knee felt good enough to take in a little scenery at one of my favorite spots. Short walk, no one around, just me and the pup. At this little spot, even in August, you can catch a cool breeze occasionally.

Maggie and I load up, me with hiking boots, Maggie sitting unsure in her new elevated car seat. (I’ll let Maggie tell you that story.)

We aren’t far into our adventure, testing my knee, when a few cars pass. And then more. Trucks, cars, vans, almost eighteen wheelers.

The dust is so thick you could cut it with a knife, kinda like Texas humidity after extended rainfall straight into ninety-plus degree weather.

Too stubborn to turn around, I’m determined we will walk. Maggie is enjoying our time too, minus the dust bowl. Driving to another spot just wasn’t appealing today. Besides, curiosity, while mostly good, can also be a nemesis. What the freak is going on down here?

Recently,a truck of some sort damaged the Red bridge, a historic bridge. I didn’t read the details of how I thought people would get to the Sporting Club, but apparently my secret little spot is one way.

Most who passed (flew) by were courteous, paying attention, slowing down a tad. Some, well, I wanted to school them on manners, a little common courtesy.

We stopped so many times waiting for vehicles to pass, Maggie at my side ready to be picked up, safely situated in mama’s arms.

The dust was horrible.

We won’t be going back until the bridge is evaluated and repaired, and the road closed to thru traffic.

At first I despised those who dare disturb our quiet. The further I got into my walk I began thinking how their world was also turned upside down. I spotted some mighty fine new cars, even while sucking dirt.

Two miles. Maggie and I endured two easy, dusty miles.

I’m so soft after surgery, and after all of 2020.

Even considering less than ideal circumstances, today felt good.

Goal: knee to nose.

Vintage and savage.

(My boots are actually blue and gray.)
