Well, this rocks my world.
The photos included, they rock my world.
The last research paper I wrote was concerning different learning styles. I barely scratched the surface. Visual, tactile, auditory, even fragrance help some to learn and retain information. All senses. Not one size fits all.
A medical doctor friend in College Station, as I was researching, gave me my first clue into color cues. Obviously he’s intelligent, he’s a specialized physician. When studying, say, for an exam on different bacteria, his classmate used colored pencils. My friend asked him why. He gives an (obvious) example, when you take an exam and you inevitably blank. You KNOW the answer, but basically you’ve had a brain fart. When using color there’s an additional cue, or trigger, you 'see' the answer, the blue answer, or the green answer. You are better able to recall information. I know I’m not explaining this very well. BUT if someone is a creative learner these tools are amazing. They definitely contributed to my success as a non-traditional student. I learned more, retained more in my 50’s than I ever did in my teen years.
A gentleman I worked with, after moving here, had a hard time memorizing wordy company policy for a specific test. I asked him his favorite music, a favorite song. We then put company policy to music, would sing policy. His smile was my reward. He learned, we just had to find HOW he would learn most effectively. Simple example, may seem silly to some, but not to him. And not to me. It worked.
Unfortunately, teachers today, good teachers, are overwhelmed with too many students per class, teaching to government testing, and teaching students with vastly different learning styles. Something like the photos I've included reinforce students’ learning, without them even realizing perhaps.
This is just one more way to reach ALL students.
(I don't know where the school is located with the genius staff, otherwise I would give credit.)
