I Miss This

Four out of six people at the gym this afternoon were Texans. A mother and son from Corpus, my Houston friend, and moi. One is Cali, Veronica. (I shared her video a week or so ago, but I will share it again. I told her tonight it makes me smile every time I watch it.) True athletes, these people. I really can’t think of a better way to spend my Friday afternoon.

(Oh, I can’t forget our fearless trainer from Louisiana, pictured below. His knowledge and skill, and ability to make pain fun, is a gift.)

We planked and pulled 40, 50 and 60 pound sand bags down the length of the gym. Pretty smart, I drag the 40 pound, as this is my first rodeo. Somewhere around the third round of this nonsense, I accidentally hook up with the 50 pound bag. “Look at you, rocking the 50 pound bag, Debbie!” Our leader is a little excited concerning my bravery. It was an accident, I reply. I sure didn’t mean to get the 50 pound bag. Yep, I’m a smart one. (I included a picture below, of another class, not ours.)

Hang cleans, or something, were part of our weights tonight. Some of this stuff takes a little coordination, which is a good thing, because a little coordination is all I have. UT helps keep me straight, look up, she tells me. (I let my chest fall when I look down.) I feel like Mary Kathryn Gallagher, from Saturday Night Live, at times. It takes a village.

The last five minutes were butt lifts and donkey kicks, a piece of cake, compared to our workout. Well, except my pesky hams were cramping early on. Continuing to lift, I ask UT if her legs are cramping. Oh yeah, she tells me, but she kept going. Well okay then...If she keeps lifting, I keep lifting. It’s normal apparently to cramp a little.

These are the best memories, my workout buddies, such a diverse crew. In Jackson, working out in a gym is quite expensive, the overhead for gym owners is crazy. However, working out keeps me sane. It's imperative to remain active, strong, and healthy, and ward off future injuries. Some of these things can be prevented with diet and exercise. Find a way to motivate, you and me.

(Here’s Veronica’s video, in case you’ve not viewed it. She is a lovely person.)
